Scientists for long have been worried about the enervating condition of the Ozone layer. Although efforts are being made through the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete Ozone Layer which came into being on January 1, 1989, there is still a lot that needs to be done.
The eighteenth meeting of the parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, organized by the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) in New Delhi from 30 October-3 November 2006 will discuss not only the achievements but will also try to chalk out a 10 year road map for the 189 countries which are party to this protocol.
According to the protocol, substances such as CFCs were once commonly used in refrigerators, A/Cs, industrial cleaning need to be phased out to keep the protective layer over the Antarctica intact.
Facts reveal that in spite of all the efforts, the ozone hole over Antarctica reached the all time high on September 24, 2006, when the hole was equal to an area of 11.4 million square miles.
It’s the need of the hour that the governments adhere to the protocol and stop the use of the ozone depleting substances, which is why these meetings play an important role.

But for implementation of any non-conentional technology which directly affects the production and economy, is bit hard to accept.
But just like CDM, GFL and SFL has reduced their production of HFCs and SF6 substantially...
this will also happen.
